After Berlin, it is Amsterdam’s turn to uncover some gems with, for instance, the true digital artist ED ATKINS’s exhibition: Recent Ouija. It takes place at the Amsterdam Museum of Contemporary Art: the Stedelijk museum.
ED ATKINS is a 33-year old British artist and already famous all over the world. As a matter of fact, we have come across some of his works at the Guggenheim in Bilbao.
Recent Ouija is a reference to the Ouija board game that was supposed to communicate with the dead through a wooden board filled with letters and numbers and a wooden arrow in the middle of the board.
This contemporary artist has chosen to center all of his work on the relationship between the human and virtual worlds. To achieve that ED ATKINS has created a universe full of video projections, 3D, sound effects and quotations.
ED ATKINS’s environment is in fact a virtual one with an avatar he invented and to whom he lends his voice and his gestures.
Careful, it’s only digital fantasy.
Each work of ED ATKINS approaches one of these themes: social relations, love, mortality or sexuality. Putting us in front of problems that exist in the real world is the goal.
Our thanks to Carlos Remini for this compilation of Recent Ouija:
ED ATKINS Recent Ouija exhibition is not light, the artist’s vision is quite pessimistic and that’s what we liked about it. To be avoided if you’re in a dark mood.
Practical info: Recent Ouija until May 31st, 2015 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
